The Boiler Room at the London Design Biennale, 2021

As Britain slowly moved out of lockdown, Tel Aviv University became part of the first international festival to return in person to the UK in more than a year, as TAU's School of Architecture was selected to design the Israeli pavilion at the 2021 London Design Biennale, held at Somerset House. The Israeli Pavilion is a multi-sensory experience called 'The Boiler Room', made from 2,500 hashtagged boiler switches, that represent the boiling discourse and the tensions between what is global and what is national.

Tel Aviv University Trust has invited the public, through a digital campaign, to turn on a switch with their hashtag of choice, which in return appeared in the physical version of the installation at Somerset House, where people from all over the world interacted with each other's opinions. The donation of each switch was used to support the installation and students from TAU's School of Architecture, and it enabled further exhibitions of the installation in Europe and Israel.

The campaign also involved the charity's first in-person event in over a year, as an exclusive group of sponsors, donors, trustees and partners, including Israel's Deputy Ambassador and Cultural Attaché to the UK, met with the design team for an opening toast.

Thousands of people have visited the Israeli Pavillion at the biennale, and press outlets in Israel, the UK, and worldwide have covered the installation. Moreover, thanks to the thousands of visitors who voted for their favourite installation from over 35 Pavilions and exhibitions at the festival, the Israeli Pavillion was awarded the prestigious Public Medal.
